How SMEs Can Attract Talent When They Can't Compete with Multinational Salaries

Salary isn't the only lever. The non-monetary benefits Irish SMEs can lead with to win candidates over Dublin's tech and financial giants.

The SME talent dilemma

Irish SMEs routinely tell us they lose good candidates to Dublin's tech and financial giants on salary alone. It's a real disadvantage — but salary is far from the only lever.

Lead with what multinationals can't offer

  • True flexible/hybrid working — multinationals talk about it; SMEs often genuinely live it.
  • Less corporate bureaucracy — faster decisions, real ownership, no six-layer approval chains.
  • A shorter commute — a local role can be worth thousands in time and travel saved.
  • Faster paths to promotion — in a 20-person company, standout performers are visible immediately.
  • Breadth of role — wear multiple hats and grow skills faster than in a siloed corporate job.

Say it in the advert

The mistake SMEs make is burying these benefits in paragraph five. Lead the job post with them. A candidate choosing between a €55k corporate role and a €48k SME role will often pick the SME if the advert makes the non-monetary upside obvious.
